This Year’s Project
Product: Home Helper
The SENG302 project for 2025 involved the creation of an application for renovators, builders, designers and the wider community engaged with home-improvement. Home Helper is designed to make the lives of those renovating their home simpler by helping create and organise plans, recording and scheduling jobs/work, viewing and editing visualisations, finding the tradesman and builders and getting in touch with other like-minded individuals. Renovators can interact with the wider community by sharing their knowledge about renovation, reaching out to professional builders, designers and more, selling or exchanging furnishing items with others, or creating ‘journeys’ that show the story of their renovation bit by bit to share with friends and family. Each team has picked their own vision for the project and among the envisioned features, the app could provide the following:
- Calendar planning of renovation events
- Renovation management with a record of jobs, materials, pricing, etc. . .
- 2- or 3-dimensional room furnishing planning tool
- Q/A forum and blog for providing help and resource to other renovators
- Commercial builder/designer support with booking and invoicing functionality
- Explorable tradesman hub and profiles to find help for jobs
- A marketplace to sell/exchange furnishing items or other renovation supplies
- Virtual tours (videos) of renovated houses/rooms
- Exportable renovation timeline with images and quotes
Working in a team to develop a piece of working, usable, and useful software is difficult. Doing this with a set of evolving requirements, even though realistic, makes it even more challenging. Students gained valuable experience with a range of industry-standard tools and techniques as well as working within a modern software process.
From a common basis with a restrictive set of user requirements, the twelve teams delivered very different and interesting pieces of software. Students learnt how to develop a professional product and add their own touch by proposing user stories depending on potential specific audience requirements.
