Frequently Asked Questions


Q: What are the main differences between the two degree programmes in terms of the main skills acquired by students and career prospects?  Do employers generally prefer one qualification over the other?
A: Graduates of both programmes are currently in strong demand, and each can lead to slightly different jobs. Take a look at our pages for Computer Science and Software Engineering for more information the differences between the two programmes.

Q: I already have a degree in another discipline. Would I be able to do a bridging programme such as GradDipSci to get a qualification equivalent to BE (SENG)?
A: There isn’t a bridging program available, although it is possible to cross-credit some courses between a B.Sc. and a B.E. The details are in regulation 7 of the B.Sc. degree (see the Award Regulations for the Faculty of Science at www.canterbury.ac.nz/publications/calendar.shtml).

Q: I want to enrol in a course I don’t meet the pre-requisites for. How do I apply for an exemption?
A: For a pre-requisite exemption, please complete the form found here. It is also possible to apply to complete the pre-requisite the same semester as completing the exempted course (concurrent enrolment). The form for this is available here.

Q: I would like to enrol in a course I’ve failed to pass twice, how can I do this?
A: Complete the form found here to apply for a third enrolment.

Q: How can I gain UC credits for study at other institutions?
A: Complete the Transfer of Credit form found here.

Q: I've missed some assessment due to illness, or my performance has been impaired, what should I do?
A: If it is during term time, it's best to check with the lecturer to see if you can get an extension for the assessment, but if that's not possible (and for final exams) apply for an Special Consideration.

Q: Who do I go to for personal advice?
A: For advice about courses for a B.Sc., the Science Student advisors <> can help; for a B.E.(Hons), the Engineering Student advisors <> can help. If you have enquiries about matters relating to course content you should contact the CSSE department.
